Post Inauguration Forecasting
Ahhhhhh, I slowly release a breath I have held for some time (I’m not the only one, right?).
With the new administration sworn-in and on the job, my expectations are cautiously elevated. I wait to see what substantive steps the Biden Whitehouse will attempt to enact to aid millions of residents holding on by their fingertips. Some have already let go-while for the long-stalled second-round stimulus package.
We are not naïve. We recognize that not all campaign promises see the light of day. However, we who pushed, pulled, fundraised, precinct walked, phone banked, voted, and delivered victory not just once but twice this election season have expectations. We expect impactful policy proposals, social program expansion, financial waivers, or moratoriums that give residents a little room to regroup in these unprecedented times. And before it is said or thought- this is not a handout. This is a late payment on long overdrawn accounts. I’ve searched and failed to uncover records of formerly enslaved people receiving their 40-acres and a mule.
We simply want what the big boys always seem to get, even when programs or dollars are designated elsewhere. Like new bankruptcy laws that are as equitable as those afforded Fortune 500 companies. Taxes where everyone pays their fair share. Universal healthcare that unties you from toxic relationships (work/marriage, etc.) The $7.25 federal rate is a disgrace. (If that bastion of social progressiveness called Florida can phase in a fifteen-dollar minimum wage, the feds can match.) These last two would result in an immediate reduction of homeless persons.
I recognize that it is quite a starting point. Let’s start, anyway. To begin is to move forward and forward often means improvement at some level. Level up White House, level up, your voters are watching, taking notes, and are more WOKE than before. Momentum is at your back.
Your Immediate Task: Let your local and national elected officials know you are alert and tracking their actions, inactions, and silence. Stacey may have ignited the spark, but you intend to fan a roaring flame.
