Tribe, recall earlier when I advised you to pay attention to elected positions at the middle and further down the ballot? Do not relax because the presidential election appears to be decided for most. Most. The election continues with the US Senate run-offs in Georgia. January 5, 2021, is as vital as November 3, 2020.
The Georgia battle decides who has the voting majority in the Senate. Remember your civics and history classes- the federal government is a triangle. Each side needed to support its weight, carry out its specific responsibilities and check the other two’s actions. Congress controls the federal governments’ purse and makes the laws of the land, advance or defeat White House nominations for cabinet candidates, etc.
Where are your pain points?
If you are concerned or financially and medically impacted by the COVID-19 virus- stay alert. If you have any hopes for student loan debt relief- stay alert. If you are hoping for an eviction moratorium extension- stay alert. If you or someone you care about is hanging by a thread and needs another government stimulus package- stay alert. If you own or work for a small business and need help staying afloat with monies actually intended for neighborhood shops rather than steered toward multinationals- stay alert.
If any of the above issues touch you and you want to tip the scales towards some relief, support Georgia’s US Senate run-off election. The outcome is so crucial that other elected officials, political pundits, news outlets, and grassroots organizations are pouring vats of money or tireless energy into that election.
“Black women decide elections,” said Glynda C. Carr, Higher Heights co-founder and president, quoted in The New York Times article (Nov 29)-They’re Ready for Their Seat at the Table.
The Georgia run-off is less than thirty days away. If you live in Georgia, have friends, family, and relatives in the state who are eligible to vote-please vote and encourage them to do so.
Your Immediate Task: Keep your focus on Georgia. Encourage Georgia residents to show up and show out at the POLLS or mail in their ballots early. The election results matter as much as the election of Kamala Harris and Joseph Biden. This election cycle continues.
